Chinese Business Association of Bio-Medical Engineering — Second Visit
To promote the development of the biotechnology industry and deepen exchange among industry, government, academia, research, and medical circles, the Chinese Business Association of Bio-Medical Engineering arranges field visits in addition to its regular meetings. On November 11, director Tien-Tsai Hsu arranged a visit to HMD BioMedical Inc.
Founded in 2000, HMD has spent 16 years building its business and recognized early that brand development is the key to sustainability. Through its partnership with the Brazilian government, HMD adopted a co-branding strategy to sell blood glucose meters jointly with IQUEGO, securing a large contract for one billion test strips per year. This distinctive overseas expansion model not only generated substantial orders but also brought its own brand to prominence. The first-phase plant in Brazil had been completed and was expected to open grandly at the end of that December.
South America is a sizeable common market that should not be underestimated. Director Hsu hopes this experience can help more Taiwanese medical companies go international — exporting semi-finished goods into Brazil for final local assembly, replicating the co-branding model and pushing Taiwan's medical industry toward a new milestone. Beyond Brazil, HMD has also reached a BOT agreement with the Algerian government and will soon carry out installation testing, introducing its self-developed automation equipment to reduce labor needs, suit local conditions, and boost efficiency and international competitiveness. With “TABC” (Taiwan, Algeria, Brazil, China) as its business map, HMD is advancing toward becoming an internationally renowned medical device brand.
